Dona Rosa Signed Barro Negro Vessel, Oaxaca Mexico
This hand-coiled black pottery vessel is signed on the underside “Dona Rosa / SB Oaxaca Mx,” referencing the renowned barro negro tradition of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca. Doña Rosa (Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto) is widely recognized for popularizing the polished black finish of Oaxacan pottery in the mid-20th century, transforming the region’s traditional matte gray clay into the lustrous black style now iconic worldwide.
The vessel features a rounded, bulbous body with a gently flared neck and wide mouth, finished in a deep black surface with subtle tonal variation and visible hand-formed character. The compact scale and organic form are consistent with decorative studio pottery produced in Oaxaca, intended for display rather than utilitarian use.
While the inscription supports association with the Doña Rosa tradition, exact workshop authorship cannot be independently verified. Nonetheless, the signed base and traditional construction make this an appealing example of Oaxacan folk pottery for collectors.
Condition
In good condition overall, with minor shelf wear to the underside. Light surface marks consistent with hand-crafted pottery are present. No cracks or structural damage observed.
