Description

Elgean Joshevama Hopi Kachina “Brothers of the Sky”

Hand-carved by Hopi artist Elgean Joshevama, “Brothers of the Sky – Eagle & Kwatukya” celebrates the living spirit of the heavens through extraordinary craftsmanship. Carved from a single piece of cottonwood root, this powerful Kachina stands tall with outstretched wings, each feather individually incised and painted in rich natural hues of turquoise, red, yellow, and black. The traditional pigments and matte surface reflect Joshevama’s respect for ancestral technique, while his composition captures motion, reverence, and spiritual balance.

Signed and inscribed on the underside, the piece embodies Joshevama’s signature style—dynamic form, meticulous detail, and deep cultural authenticity. Representing the Eagle Katsina and his celestial brother Kwatukya, it symbolizes strength, guardianship, and harmony between sky and earth.

An exceptional work from a respected contemporary Hopi carver, this piece bridges tradition and artistry, offering collectors a vivid expression of Hopi cosmology and fine craftsmanship.
