Description

Mata Ortiz Pottery Lot – Signed Works by Efraín Lucero & Jose Quezada (2 Pieces)

A curated two-piece lot of authentic Mata Ortiz pottery, representing the Casas Grandes revival tradition of Chihuahua, Mexico. This offering pairs a finely detailed sgraffito jar by Efraín Lucero with a sculptural blackware effigy vessel by Jose Quezada. Both works are hand-coiled, stone-burnished, signed, and date to the late 20th–early 21st century.

Together, these pieces highlight the range of Mata Ortiz artistry—from precise geometric surface carving and polychrome detailing to expressive sculptural form.

Included Pieces

Efraín Lucero Sgraffito Jar
Hand-coiled jar with rounded form and asymmetric cutaway mouth. Decorated with a broad red spiral band featuring black scrolls edged by twin green pinstripes. The graphite-black body is stone-burnished and densely sgraffito-carved with interlocking triangular hatching. Signed “Efrain Lucero” on the underside.

Jose Quezada Blackware Lizard Effigy Jar
Hand-coiled and sculpted blackware vessel with a low, rounded form. Highly polished surface with matte incised triangular and fan motifs. A boldly modeled horned-lizard effigy climbs over the shoulder, creating dramatic sculptural contrast. Signed “Jose Quezada” on the base.
