Description

Vintage Mexican Majolica Hen Tureen – Hand-Painted Folk Pottery, 13"

Vibrant vintage Mexican majolica hen tureen, hand-painted in bold tones of green, ochre, rust, and blue. The sculpted hen features expressive black linework and stylized feather motifs, resting atop a coordinating oval base with horizontal dash decorations. Crafted from terracotta clay with a lustrous tin glaze, this piece reflects the lively aesthetic of mid-20th-century Mexican folk ceramics.

This charming covered dish likely originates from the Guanajuato or Santa Rosa de Lima region—areas celebrated for their colorful majolica earthenware and freehand decorative style distinct from traditional Talavera of Puebla. Both whimsical and functional, it serves beautifully as a kitchen accent, centerpiece, or collector’s display piece.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. Minor chips to the paint and glaze throughout, including small rim and surface flakes. Structurally sound with no visible cracks or repairs; colors remain bright and the glaze retains a pleasing sheen.
