Harry Benjamin Signed Mimbres Style Pottery Bowl, Rabbit, 1989
Hand-coiled and hand-painted Mimbres style pottery bowl by noted Southwestern artist Harry Benjamin, signed and dated “Benjamin ’89” on the underside. The interior features a stylized rabbit rendered in black on a warm cream ground, centered within a geometric diamond motif and framed by bold linear borders typical of Mimbres-inspired design. The graphic composition and strong contrast reflect Benjamin’s engagement with ancient Southwestern visual traditions interpreted through a contemporary lens.
Harry Benjamin was a central figure in the Silver City, New Mexico art community. He operated What’s a Pot Shop beginning in 1982, served as the original curator of the Silver City Museum, and received the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2008. This bowl represents his late 20th-century ceramic work and is a desirable example of modern Mimbres-style pottery by a well-documented regional artist.
Condition
In good condition overall, with some scuffing noted to one area. No remarkable damage, cracks, or repairs observed. The painted decoration remains clear and stable.
