Josefina Aguilar “Virgen de Guadalupe” Folk Art Clay Sculpture, Oaxaca
A luminous hand-sculpted and hand-painted clay figure of Our Lady of Guadalupe by acclaimed Oaxacan folk artist Josefina Aguilar (b. 1945, Ocotlán de Morelos, Mexico). Shown in prayer, the Virgin wears her radiant red and green robes adorned with gold stars, framed by celestial rays and attended by cherubs holding a banner reading “Mater (Immaculata) Ora Pronovis”—Latin for “Mother Immaculate, pray for us.” This tender invocation captures both faith and artistry in a single gesture.
Aguilar’s works, celebrated for their warmth and vivid storytelling, embody the heart of Mexican folk tradition. A member of the renowned Aguilar family of potters, her pieces reside in major collections worldwide, including the Museum of International Folk Art (Santa Fe) and the Mexic-Arte Museum (Austin). Signed “Josefina Aguilar” beneath the base and marked Hecho en México.
Condition
In excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The paintwork remains bright and intact, showing only minimal surface variation consistent with hand-painted terracotta.
