1820 William Chawner II London Sterling Old English Spoons (Pair)
A refined pair of George IV sterling silver tablespoons, hallmarked for London, 1820, by William Chawner II, one of England’s most respected early-19th-century silversmiths. Crafted in the graceful Old English pattern, each spoon shows the balanced lines and understated elegance that defined the Georgian dining table.
William Chawner II registered his mark “WC” in 1815 and went on to establish Chawner & Co., the firm that set the standard for fine English flatware throughout the Victorian era. After his death in 1834, the workshop passed to his widow Mary Chawner and later to his son-in-law George Adams—whose name continued to appear on England’s finest silver. Pieces like these represent the workshop’s earliest, most authentic period of craftsmanship.
Hallmarks include the lion passant for sterling purity, crowned leopard’s head for London, duty mark of George IV, and date letter “e” for 1820.
Condition
Good. Light surface wear and faint scratches consistent with age and use; no bends or structural issues observed. The hallmarks remain crisp and legible. We’ll leave the polishing to you.
