Antique Chinese Mahjong Set – Bone & Bamboo Tiles in Brass Chest, c.1920s
A fine early 20th-century Chinese Mahjong set housed in a lacquered hardwood chest with four fitted drawers and a sliding front door. The case is accented with pierced brass corner mounts, lotus-form plates, and a curved brass handle, with the front panel featuring a gilt double happiness motif—symbolizing joy and good fortune. Containing 284 total pieces, the set includes 146 hand-carved bovine bone and bamboo tiles, 136 bone scoring sticks, four tokens, and a single die.
The tiles display the traditional bamboo, character, and circle suits, along with wind and dragon symbols, all delicately hand-painted in vivid pigments. Such bone-and-bamboo sets were typical of Mahjong production during the Republic of China period (circa 1920s–1930s), prized for their craftsmanship and balance. This example reflects the artistry and cultural significance of Mahjong’s early export era—both a playable artifact and a collector’s display piece.
Condition
Fair overall. Exhibits scratches, scuffing, and oxidation appropriate to age. One drawer is bowed, with visible wear and splitting to interior shelving. Brass fittings display patina and surface darkening. All tiles and accessories show toning and handling wear consistent with age. The back panel is absent. Structurally sound and complete as shown, retaining authentic character throughout.
