Cast Iron Guanyin Bodhisattva Statue — Verdigris Patina, 16", Mid-20th Century
A cast iron figure of Guanyin (Avalokitesvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, depicted standing in a graceful pose with elongated ribbons and flowing robes. The face bears a calm, meditative expression beneath an ornate pointed headdress, typical of East Asian representations of Guanyin. The statue exhibits a dark green-black verdigris surface with scattered areas of rust oxidation, confirming its iron composition (a magnet adheres).
This piece likely dates from the mid-20th century, a period when devotional and decorative Buddhist figures were widely produced in cast iron across China and Japan for domestic shrines and export. Its weight (over 5 lbs) and intricate casting indicate quality craftsmanship.
Though some elements are absent, as visible in the images, the piece retains a strong spiritual and sculptural presence — a fine representation of compassionate Buddhist artistry suitable for display or collection.
Condition:
Good overall condition with expected oxidation and surface wear consistent with age. Some missing components and rusted areas, particularly on the back and base. Stable structure with no major cracks or repairs. Displays attractively.
Dimensions:
Overall: 16" H × 5 1/2" W × 2 3/8" D
