Empire Revival Mahogany Armchair with Carved Lion Heads & Red Velvet Upholstery
A distinguished late 19th to early 20th century Empire Revival mahogany armchair, richly carved with lion-head arm supports, scrolling winged terminals, and robust paw feet. The crest rail features deep acanthus leaf carving and a rolled top edge, echoing the neoclassical grandeur of the early Empire period. Upholstered in deep red tufted velvet on the backrest and matching smooth velvet on the seat, bordered with period-appropriate trim.
This piece exemplifies the opulent craftsmanship of the Empire Revival and Victorian Renaissance Revival movements (circa 1880–1910), blending classical motifs with the Victorian taste for bold, sculptural form. A commanding presence in any study, parlor, or collection of fine antique furniture.
Condition:
Good condition overall, showing light wear to the armrests from use and gentle surface marks consistent with age. Upholstery is in excellent condition—vibrant, plush, and free from damage or discoloration. The mahogany frame is sturdy and well-finished, displaying a deep, warm tone and subtle patina.
