“Double Happiness” Ginger Jar – Chenghua Mark
A later Chinese blue and white porcelain ginger jar with domed lid, finely painted in underglaze cobalt blue with scrolling peony vines and prominent “Double Happiness” (囍) symbols. The form follows traditional Ming and Qing dynasty wedding jar designs, representing marital joy and prosperity.
The base bears a Chenghua reign mark (成化年製) in underglaze blue — an apocryphal mark referencing the Ming dynasty Chenghua Emperor (1465–1487). While inspired by imperial prototypes, this example is a 20th-century or later reproduction crafted in homage to that celebrated style. The bright glaze, clean foot rim, and crisp cobalt decoration are consistent with modern Jingdezhen porcelain. A handsome and decorative piece capturing the enduring elegance of classic Chinese design.
Condition:
Excellent condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Glaze is bright, smooth, and even. The foot rim shows minimal firing grit consistent with manufacture. A superb decorative example, free from damage and well cared for.
