Signed M. John Navajo Sterling, Turquoise & 14K Gold Concho Belt
Signed Navajo concho belt by M. John, crafted in sterling silver with natural turquoise stones and applied 14K gold accents, confirmed by acid testing. The set consists of nine conchos and a matching buckle, each boldly hand-stamped with radiating scalloped and feather motifs. Every element is centered with a bezel-set turquoise cabochon framed by sculptural gold scroll and dot appliqué, creating strong visual contrast and dimensional detail.
This belt originates from a fine New Mexico collection of Navajo and Zuni jewelry assembled between the 1960s and 1980s, with the piece itself dating to the late 20th century. The turquoise stones are natural and unenhanced, exhibiting rich blue coloration with visible matrix consistent across all ten stones. Each concho measures 3" x 3.7" x 0.64" and is fitted with traditional soldered copper slides designed for a 2-inch-wide leather belt. The belt is finished with a thick, high-quality leather strap measuring 42 inches in total length, fitting waist sizes 29" to 41".
Weighing 787.49 grams for the conchos and buckle alone, this is a substantial and authoritative example of Navajo silversmithing, combining sterling silver, natural turquoise, and solid gold accents in a powerful, wearable form.
Condition:
Good condition. The silver shows tarnish and surface wear consistent with age and use; the piece has been intentionally left unpolished. All turquoise stones are secure in their bezel settings with no cracks or losses observed. The leather belt shows wear from use but remains supple, intact, and fully functional.
