19th C. New England Hand-Turned Wooden Dough Bowl, 14½"
A handsome 19th-century New England hand-turned wooden dough bowl, carved from a single solid piece of hardwood. The bowl features a warm, golden-brown patina with visible turning rings and hand-tool marks consistent with early craftsmanship. The underside bears authentic scorch marks from historical use—likely from being set near or on a warm stove—along with shallow chisel marks and a superficial age crack that does not go through.
Once an essential household tool for mixing and proofing bread dough, this bowl now serves as a beautiful example of early American domestic life. Its deep form, subtle asymmetry, and richly aged surface make it an appealing piece for collectors of Americana, primitive kitchenware, or rustic décor.
Condition
In good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. Surface shows minor scratches, knife marks, and light rim wear. The crack visible on the underside is superficial and does not extend through the wood. Scorch marks on the base, characteristic of functional 19th-century New England kitchenware. No repairs noted; the finish retains its warm, authentic patina.
