James Gasowski “Night Moves” 2009 Mixed Media on Paper
Night Moves (2009) by James Gasowski reveals the artist’s distinctive balance between gesture and structure. Executed in mixed media on paper, the work layers paint, graphite, and possibly charcoal to build an intricate field of motion and restraint. Tones of blue, gray, and black evoke a nocturnal rhythm, while interwoven lines and brushstrokes create a sense of measured movement. The composition’s architectural rhythm and negative space demonstrate Gasowski’s mastery of spatial tension and calligraphic abstraction.
Signed lower right “Gasowski” and titled, signed, and dated again on the verso, this work reflects the artist’s mature Santa Fe period and his ongoing dialogue with post-war abstraction.

Artist Biography:
James Gasowski (American, b. 1954) was born in San Francisco and studied at San Francisco State University and the Academy of Art. His career developed through the 1980s and 1990s, first in Europe and later in New Mexico, where he became part of the Santa Fe and Truth or Consequences art communities. Gasowski’s work explores the expressive relationship between line, color, and rhythm—often blending painting and drawing in abstract compositions that convey both energy and structure.
He has exhibited widely, including shows at Winterowd Fine Art (Santa Fe), Decorazon Gallery (Dallas), and international art fairs in New York, Miami, and London. His paintings are held in numerous public and private collections, including the New Mexico State Capitol Permanent Collection.
