Oaxacan Folk Art Virgin & Child by Concepción Aguilar, Signed Clay Figure
Charming hand-painted clay sculpture by Concepción Aguilar (b. 1959), a celebrated member of the famed Aguilar family of folk artists from Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca, Mexico. Depicting the Virgin Mary and Child, the piece is richly finished in bright hues of cobalt blue, magenta, and green, with metallic red crowns and radiating steel wire accents. The work bears Aguilar’s characteristic expressive faces and fine gilded detailing along the garments.
Concepción Aguilar is among the second generation of the renowned Aguilar sisters—descendants of Isaura Alcántara Díaz—whose vivid, hand-modeled ceramics brought Oaxacan folk sculpture to international recognition. Signed “Concepcion Aguilar” on the reverse.
