Hopi “Morning Kachina” (Talavai) Hand-Carved & Painted Cottonwood, Signed
Traditional Hopi “Morning Kachina” (Talavai) figure, hand-carved from cottonwood root and decorated with vibrant geometric motifs in turquoise, red, black, and green. The elongated form features a stylized mask with painted facial details, a broad collar, and angular robe designs echoing Hopi ceremonial symbolism. The underside bears a faint inscription reading “Morning Kachina,” identifying the subject.
The Morning Kachina, or Early Morning Singer, represents the katsina spirit who greets the dawn and awakens the village with song, heralding renewal and harmony. Such figures are central to Hopi ceremonial life and are carved to teach younger generations the identities and roles of these revered spirits. This example, with its graceful curvature and balanced color palette, reflects traditional craftsmanship rooted in early- to mid-20th-century Hopi carving practices. A culturally significant and visually compelling addition to any Native American art collection.

Good condition overall, with light surface wear consistent with age. Pigments remain vivid with minor marks. No visible cracks, chips, or repairs. Faint inscription on underside reads “Morning Kachina.”
