French Louis XV Style Carved Oak Buffet à Deux Corps, Ca. 1880
An impressive French buffet à deux corps in the Louis XV Revival style, circa 1880. Crafted from solid quarter-sawn oak, this two-part cabinet features a richly carved crest formed from a single block of wood, surmounting double glazed doors enclosing three fully adjustable shelves with later interior lighting. The lower section includes two dovetailed drawers above paneled cupboard doors, all adorned with rocaille shells, acanthus leaves, and floral scrollwork. The cabinet rests on elegant cabriole legs terminating in hoof feet, joined by a shaped lower shelf approximately 12 inches high.
The top surface displays geometric parquetry in oak, enhancing the natural grain and depth of the wood. Brass hardware and escutcheons complement the warm patina throughout. A quintessential example of the Louis XV Revival period, this piece blends Rococo ornamentation with the structural balance typical of late 19th-century craftsmanship—likely of northern French origin, such as Normandy or the Loire Valley. Locks function properly and include a key.
Condition:
In good condition, showing age-appropriate wear including natural splits, light surface marks, and a right drawer that is somewhat difficult to close. The oak retains an appealing luster and the piece remains structurally solid and fully functional.
Dimensions:
Lower cabinet: 42.5 in. height x 55 in. width x 25 in. depth
Overall height: 104 in.
