Shanghai Mansion Doors Queen Canopy Bed — Iron Boss Bands, Lion Knockers
A pair of compound courtyard doors salvaged from a Shanghai mansion now serve as the headboard of a custom queen-size four-poster canopy bed. Consistent with the shikumen residential tradition built for Shanghai's wealthy merchant and official families, the doors are constructed of vertical-plank wood crossed by four full-width horizontal iron bands set with graduated dome boss studs — a configuration used on high-status compound gates both structurally and as a declaration of household rank. The doors originally bore vermilion lacquer, the classical Chinese mark of a wealthy household captured in the phrase 朱门 ("vermilion gates"), and were refinished after arriving in the United States in 2021.
At center, a paired cast iron plaque carries two guardian lion-mask door knockers (pùshǒu) with suspended ring pulls — ancient protective figures placed on the gates of mansions and officials' residences to ward off harmful forces. The left plaque bears the character 鳳 (Fèng, Phoenix), representing female virtue, beauty, and nurture; the right bears 龍 (Lóng, Dragon), representing male power and strength. Together they form one of the most auspicious pairings in Chinese culture, historically associated with the empress and emperor and used to bless a household with harmony.
The four-poster canopy frame was custom built in El Paso in dark ebonized solid wood with 4" × 4" posts and mortise-and-tenon corner joinery, purpose-built to carry the weight and scale of the doors. The reverse of the headboard retains its original grey painted surface with hand-forged iron strap hardware and wooden crossbar bracing intact. The lot includes the door headboard, complete canopy bed frame, and side rails; available provenance documentation from the 2021 import and pest treatment will be conveyed to the buyer.
CONDITION
Good and sturdy. The iron boss bands and lion-mask plaque retain strong cast detail with an even, consistent aged patina throughout. The refinished door face shows surface staining, scattered hardware holes from removed fittings, and light grain checking along several planks; the reverse painted surface displays areas of paint loss and rust spotting on the iron straps.
