Description

Kaiser Porzellan "Nanking" Vase — Chinoiserie Pheasant & Floral, W. Germany c.1970s

A baluster-form yenyen vase in Kaiser Porzellan's "Nanking" pattern, produced at the Kaiser-Porzellanmanufaktur in Staffelstein, Bavaria, and bearing the blue crowned AK backstamp with "W. Germany" — a mark used exclusively between 1970 and 1990, placing production firmly in the early-to-mid 1970s export period. The white porcelain body rises from a spreading foot ring through a full ovoid shoulder to a flared trumpet mouth, its entire surface animated by a polychrome chinoiserie composition. A golden pheasant with blue, orange, and rust plumage perches among gnarled prunus branches on the primary face; scattered across both sides are densely layered peonies, cherry blossoms, dahlias, wisteria, and foliage in orange, yellow, pink, green, and cobalt blue, anchored at the base by a stylized blue scholar's rock. Model number 18 is hand-inscribed above the backstamp.

Kaiser Porzellan traces its origins to 1872, when August Alboth founded a porcelain business in Coburg, Bavaria. The "AK" mark combines the first two letters of the Alboth and Kaiser family names, reflecting the family partnership that grew the company into a major export manufacturer. Shortly before 1970, the company refocused on export markets and renamed itself Kaiser Porzellan, producing decorative wares including tableware and ornamental vases during this period.

CONDITION
Excellent. Colors are vivid and the polychrome decoration retains strong, crisp definition across the full surface. No chips, cracks, hairlines, or restoration detected.
