Shiva Tribhanga Relief Panel Dining Table — Large-Scale South Indian Hardwood Carving
At six feet long and carved in confident high relief, this is a room-defining object. The panel depicts Shiva in tribhanga — the classical three-bend S-curve posture of Indian sacred sculpture, derived from Natyashastra dance theory, in which the body shifts at neck, waist, and knee to project divine grace rather than static authority. He stands crowned with a tiered jatamukuta, adorned with stretched disc earrings, layered beaded necklace, and a jeweled coin girdle, multiple arms extended through a field of scrolling foliate forms. At his feet, Nandi — his sacred bull and the gatekeeper between worlds — occupies the lower register alongside a reclining devotional figure, both set above a double-tier petal-and-wave plinth border. A continuous stepped-bracket motif frames all four edges, a signature device of South Indian temple chariot carving: panels in this format and scale were traditionally mounted on the towering wooden rathas — processional chariots pulled through temple towns during festival, considered among the highest expressions of South Indian sacred woodcraft. Traces of original polychrome pigment survive in the protected recesses throughout, and the verso bears a handwritten "SIVA" inscription in ink. The panel rests unfixed within its custom-built solid pine trestle base, allowing it to be lifted free and mounted vertically as a monumental wall installation — making this effectively two objects in one lot.
The panel and solid pine trestle dining base are offered together as a single lot.
CONDITION
Very Good. The table base is sturdy with no remarkable damage, and the carving retains strong definition and considerable depth across the full composition. Visible seams at the plank joins are consistent with the panel's traditional multi-board construction; a hairline crack runs the full height of the center plank joint on the carved face.
