Vintage Chinese Chippendale Faux Bamboo Armchairs — Set of 4, Caned Seats
A complete set of four Chinese Chippendale "Cockpen"-form armchairs in faux bamboo-turned hardwood, finished in a warm dark walnut, circa 1960s–1970s. Each chair presents the full vocabulary of the form: open diagonal lattice back, shaped serpentine crest rail, ring-and-node turned framing, scroll-tipped open arms, caned drop-in seat, curved corner apron brackets, and H-stretcher base — the same composition that made this silhouette a cornerstone of Hollywood Regency interiors and a recurring reference point for every generation of decorators since. The graphic lattice back reads boldly from across a room and photographs with the kind of authority that earns a chair a permanent place in a scheme.
Sets of four in this form are genuinely hard to assemble — pairs surface regularly, complete sets far less so. Each chair is fitted with a loose cushion in a multicolor woven paisley, but the caned seats beneath are the real asset: structurally honest, period-appropriate, and ready to receive whatever fabric the next room calls for.
CONDITION
Good. Frames are sturdy with age-consistent patina. Cushion fabric carries scattered soiling spots on the top and side surfaces. One leg post shows an old and stable repair of approximately 3–4 inches
