Afghan Hand-Knotted Wool Rug — Sultanabad/Ziegler Design, 8'3" × 12'2"

The Sultanabad design tradition was born from an unlikely collaboration: in 1883, the Anglo-Swiss firm Ziegler & Co. set up looms in northwest Persia and tasked local weavers with reimagining centuries-old Safavid court patterns for Victorian drawing rooms. Designers from Liberty of London and B. Altman & Co. of New York adapted classical 16th and 17th-century motifs — scaling them larger, softening the palette, opening the compositions — to suit Western rooms and Western taste. The result was one of the most influential rug aesthetics ever produced, and it never went out of fashion.

This Afghan example, hand-knotted in the first quarter of the 21st century, works directly from that blueprint: a warm taupe ground populated by an all-over field of palmettes, scrolling vines, stylized cypress forms, and scattered botanical sprays in burnt orange, cobalt blue, burgundy, olive green, cream, and purple. Ghazni wool pile on a cotton foundation, colored with natural vegetable dyes, gives the surface its characteristic depth — colors that seem to shift as light moves across the room. The border carries a continuous floral meander flanked by narrow guard stripes; hand-knotted fringe finishes both ends.

CONDITION

Excellent. Pile is full and even across the entire field with no low spots, repairs, odors, or stains. The subtle tonal variation visible in the ground is the natural behavior of handspun, vegetable-dyed wool — not wear — and is precisely what gives this class of rug its warmth and life.
