Cuzco School Oil on Canvas Madonna & Child — Gold Mantle, Framed
A Peruvian Cuzco School oil painting on unlined canvas depicting the Virgin Mary seated and cradling the Christ Child — a subject central to the colonial religious art tradition that flourished in Cusco from the 16th through 18th centuries. Indigenous and mestizo artists of the Escuela Cusqueña synthesized European Catholic iconography with Andean decorative sensibility, producing a distinctive visual language characterized by flattened perspective, jewel-toned grounds, and lavish gilt patterning. Here, the Virgin wears a rust-red dress beneath a sweeping black mantle, both surfaces animated with dense gold botanical and floral motifs; a sunburst halo of concentric scrollwork frames her head. The Christ Child's translucent white wrap is similarly touched with gilt, unifying the figures within the composition's rich, dark ground.
The canvas is presented with raw, unlined edges — a hallmark of the school's working method — and mounted without glass in a white-painted wood frame with a narrow black decorative inner molding.
CONDITION
Good. Color and gold work remain legible and intact across the full composition. The unlined canvas margins show age toning and light fraying at the edges consistent with the open presentation.
