Description

Papago or Paiute Coiled Olla Basket c.1925 — Globular Jar Form, 17" x 16"

Large coiled olla-form basket constructed with bundled grass coils bound in dark split sumac, producing a dense checkerboard surface across the full rounded body. The wide-shouldered globular jar tapering to a constricted neck with a small open mouth is consistent with utilitarian storage basketry produced by both Papago (Tohono O'odham) and Paiute weavers of the early 20th century. Dating to approximately 1925, the piece carries deep amber patination and heavy interior darkening consistent with its age. Tight coil spacing and even construction throughout the body reflect experienced workmanship.

CONDITION
Good, with age-appropriate wear. Structure is intact and the form holds firmly throughout. Wear and coil separation present along the top rim and one section of the side.
