Douglas Fulmer Stoneware & Copper Cross Wall Sculpture — Signed '03
This hand-sculpted and hand-painted wall cross by Douglas Fulmer is built from coarse-textured unglazed stoneware with copper wire elements throughout. The face of the cross is painted in terracotta sienna, bordered in white slip, with white hand-drawn wavy lines running the length of both arms — a motif consistent with Southwestern spirit and water imagery. The four quadrants flanking the cross intersection each feature a sculpted eye form with radiating copper wire lashes, darkened with black glaze at the socket. Three copper wire rods pierce and extend from both the top and bottom of the vertical arm; two rods extend from each side of the horizontal arm. The back surface is undecorated coarse stoneware, signed and dated "douglas F. 03."
Fulmer is a Carefree, Arizona studio artist whose body of work draws on Southwestern and Pueblo-inspired imagery. This cross form — combining Christian iconography with totemic eye motifs and copper wire ornamentation — is representative of his mixed-media stoneware sculpture.
CONDITION
Good. Structure is intact with no breaks or repairs observed. A hairline surface crack is visible on the upper vertical arm, consistent with the hand-building process. Residue from a previous mounting is present on the reverse.
