Description

Dong Bei Painted Cabinet c.1890 — Faux Grain Doors, Brass Hardware, Qing Dynasty

  • A late Qing Dynasty cabinet from the Dong Bei (Northeast China / Manchuria) region, circa 1890, constructed in solid wood with a black-painted frame and two removable doors decorated in a hand-painted faux wood grain technique — amber-ochre ground with swirling red grain lines framed by a red border. This decorative convention was widely used on pine and softwood furniture in the northern Chinese vernacular tradition to simulate the appearance of finer hardwood. The doors and drawers are fitted with brass ring pulls throughout. The interior is divided by a central partition into two open compartments above a bank of two shallow drawers, and one door retains carved Chinese characters on its interior face, consistent with an ownership or maker's inscription. The piece is accompanied by a dealer's inventory document attributing it as "painted cabinet, Dong Bei, c1890."

    CONDITION

Good. The cabinet is sturdy and structurally sound with all doors and drawers functioning. The black-painted frame shows finish wear and paint loss consistent with age; the faux grain decoration on the door panels is largely intact with scattered surface abrasion. Two modern magnetic catches have been added to the interior door frames.
