Pioneer Cooperage Co. Chicago Oak Whiskey Barrel — Iron Hoops, Bung Hole
A full-size oak stave barrel from Pioneer Cooperage Co. of Chicago, constructed with dark-painted iron hoops secured at riveted lap-joint overlaps. The stave faces display pronounced open grain throughout, and a bung hole is present mid-stave on the reverse side. The bottom head bears a partially legible burned cooperage stamp consistent with Pioneer Cooperage's known branding. The barrel is open at the top with no lid.
CONDITION Good. Aged and distressed character is inherent to this barrel's working history, with open-grain stave surfaces and darkened hoops consistent with extended use. Surface checking is present across multiple staves, and paint loss on several hoop sections exposes bare metal. Evidence of outdoor display includes weathering to the lower staves and base ring.
