Georgia Parkins Foster Carmel Cypress Watercolor California Landscape
Original watercolor on paper by listed California artist Georgia Parkins Foster (1881–1965), depicting a windswept cypress along the iconic Seventeen Mile Drive in Carmel. Executed in fluid, atmospheric washes, the composition captures the rugged beauty of the Monterey Peninsula—one of the most celebrated subjects in California plein air painting. The work is signed “S.P. Foster” at lower left and retains a verso inscription identifying the artist and location.
Foster was a Berkeley-based artist who exhibited at the Oakland Art Gallery (1933–1940) and with the Bay Region Art Association, later dedicating herself fully to painting after a career in public health. Her landscapes reflect the quiet tonal sensitivity associated with early-to-mid 20th century California watercolorists. This example stands out for its classic cypress form and strong coastal composition, making it particularly desirable among regional collectors.
Condition:
In very good condition overall, with light, even toning consistent with age. The watercolor surface remains stable and presents cleanly. Professionally framed with silk matting and conservation-quality presentation; frame shows minor surface wear.
