Description

H. Herrmann NY Carved Figural Putti Library Style Side Table
A Renaissance Revival library style side table retaining its original brass maker's plate from H. Herrmann Furniture Company, 527–537 West 34th Street, New York — one of the leading American furniture manufacturers of the late 19th century. Built in solid hardwood and veneer, the piece is defined by two full-round carved figural putti, each standing figure supporting the tabletop with raised arms above an acanthus-and-shell carved apron and lattice-carved frieze. The two trestle bases are joined by a turned center stretcher and terminate in scroll-carved feet. The paneled top sits within a raised ebonized frame, consistent with high-style Renaissance Revival production of the 1870s–1880s.

CONDITION

Good — the carved figural supports, acanthus apron, and trestle bases retain strong sculptural detail and structural integrity with a rich dark patina throughout. The ebonized tabletop veneer shows significant finish loss, scratching, scuffing, and areas of chipped and absent veneer across the central field. Additional noted wear includes old repairs, visible joint separation at one apron corner, and wobble consistent with age-related loosening.
