Description

Classic Brass Fireplace Mantel Mirror —with Duplex Oil Lamp Sconces

A commanding wall mirror in the Victorian tradition, built at a scale and ornamental density to anchor an entire room. The copper and brass frame has developed a deep iridescent patina — shifting blues, golds, and amber across the flat channel members — that speaks to genuine age. Cast brass hardware covers every focal point: a pair of classical goddess face medallions preside over the upper corners, a shell-and-foliate crest centers the top rail, and floral rosette medallions anchor all four corners. The beveled mirror glass sits inside a polished brass inner lip, the whole frame grounded by a turned bottom rail with ball finials. The mirror panel is wood-backed and secured with flathead screws and period clip hardware — construction details consistent with late 19th to early 20th century manufacture. Two adjustable oil lamp sconces flank the sides, each carrying a spherical brass font, a perforated English Duplex double-wick burner assembly, and a ribbed peach frosted glass shade — and they work. The burner wheels are stamped "Made in England," with one additionally marked "John Scott Made in England." Lit, with open flame reflecting in the beveled glass, this piece does something electric fixtures simply cannot.

The lot includes the mirror with frame, both sconces with all burner hardware, and both matching peach frosted glass shades.

CONDITION

Good — the frame, sconces, and cast brass ornaments are structurally intact with rich age-appropriate patination throughout. The mirror glass has visible surface scratching consistent with age. Both peach shades seat slightly loosely on the burner galleries, and one shade has a chip as shown in the reference images.
