Description

Theodore Alexander Decoupage Pietra Dura–Style Wall Panel 31×63

A large-format decorative wall panel by Theodore Alexander, executed in decoupage to render the appearance of Florentine pietra dura — the Italian hardstone inlay tradition that reached its Baroque peak in the 17th-century workshops of the Medici-founded Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. The central octagonal reserve presents a classically composed Baroque floral still life: a scrolled acanthus-handled urn in simulated verde antico and malachite, overflowing with tulips, poppies, and mixed flowering stems, set against a dramatically veined black marble ground within double gilt borders. The surrounding field is richly articulated with simulated specimen panels — onyx, travertine, breccia — punctuated by coral rosettes and gilt arabesque scrollwork at the corners. The panel is housed in a molded mahogany-toned wood frame.

Theodore Alexander was founded in 1996 by Paul Maitland-Smith Baer's Furniture, an industry luminary who began his career as a London-based antiques dealer in the 1950s and spent decades living across Southeast Asia to teach artisans the intricacies of bringing his designs to life. Homefurnishingshalloffame The brand has made a name for itself in luxury furniture and home décor, with artisans crafting heirloom-quality pieces using traditional techniques including hand painting, inlay, and decoupage. Green Front The maker's embossed brass plate and model label THA3202-285 are affixed to the verso.

CONDITION Good. The panel retains strong color saturation and crisp ornamental detail throughout the composition. Slight wear to the finish is present, consistent with normal handling and display.
