Flexible Flyer Wood & Steel Snow Sled, S.L. Allen — Eagle Decal, 1935–49
This Flexible Flyer sled — made by the S.L. Allen Company of Philadelphia — is a classic example of mid-20th-century American sled design. The slatted hardwood deck sits over a red-painted steel runner frame, with the full eagle-and-banner decal centered on the top plank and the brand's signature double-arrow graphic running its full length. The pivoting steering crossbar carries painted wing graphics and connects to an aluminum bracket. Cotton rope pull is present and intact. Label placement on the deck confirms this sled was manufactured between 1935 and 1949, when Allen displayed the model name on the top surface across the Airline series. The underside bears a carved inscription reading "AILES," almost certainly a previous owner's marking.
These sleds are bought today primarily for display — above a fireplace, on a porch, or as a seasonal decorative anchor — and the strong decal and vivid runner paint make this one well suited to the role. Functional steering mechanism is intact.
CONDITION Good. The sled has undergone previous restoration, which accounts for the uniform appearance of the runner paint and refinished deck. Age-appropriate surface wear is present across the wood, and the eagle decal shows minor edge lifting at the lower left corner. No structural damage, broken slats, or missing hardware observed.
