Description

Notturno Intarsio Sorrento Marquetry Music Box & Tray — Burl, Brass

A matched two-piece lot by Notturno Inlaid Wood Works Factory of Sorrento, Italy — a named working atelier operating on Via Fuorimura in the heart of the region's Tarsia Sorrentina tradition. The oval vanity tray presents a sprawling floral bouquet in ivory, peach, and amber tonewoods against boldly grained walnut ground, framed by a pierced brass gallery rail and cast brass handles. The hinged music box carries a complementary lid composition — mandolin, trumpet, and sheet music among flowering branches — on a high-gloss burl-veneered body with turned brass bun feet, decorative brass escutcheon, and working lock. The velvet-lined interior houses a movement that plays "Torna a Surriento," the 1902 Neapolitan song written about the town where this box was made — a pairing that is anything but accidental.

Both pieces share the same inlay palette and brass hardware family, and the lot retains its original Certificate of Warranty and maker documentation from Notturno Intarsio.

CONDITION

Good. Both pieces are fully functional — the music box movement winds, plays, and locks correctly with the included key. Finish retains good gloss with light surface scratching to the tray field and minor oxidation on the brass gallery consistent with age.
