Description

Vintage Tang-Style Ceramic Horse — Large Ombré Craquelure Glaze

A substantial ceramic horse rendered in a boldly stylized modernist idiom — rounded, volumetric body mass, elongated arching neck, and a quietly turned head with small paired ears. Where traditional Tang Dynasty horses prioritize anatomical naturalism, this interpretation reduces the form to pure sculptural weight: the body a sweeping mass, the mane a dark ridge, the whole piece commanding presence through simplicity rather than detail. The surface carries a dramatic full-body craquelure in rich amber graduating to near-black at the base, legs, and mane ridge — a technique in which the glaze is formulated to crack in a controlled, even pattern upon cooling. The result is a finely networked crackle across every surface, the warm ombré palette evoking the patina of antiquity while reading as a deliberate artistic statement. Construction is hollow earthenware with a central vent hole; rubber bumper feet are applied to the base. No maker's marks are present on the exterior; label remnants are visible on the underside but yield no legible text.

At nearly fifteen inches tall and twelve pounds, this is a large-scale, visually dominant object that commands a mantel, console, or entry surface with authority. The amber-to-near-black ombré and tactile craquelure surface translate exceptionally well in transitional, global-eclectic, and chinoiserie-influenced interiors.

CONDITION

Good. The craquelure surface is intact throughout and presents beautifully from all display angles. Minor chipping is present along the lower rear base edge — not visible from standard viewing positions and does not affect the piece's decorative integrity.
