Taos Pueblo Log Drum — Bark-On Cottonwood, Rawhide Heads, Bold Sound
traditional Taos Pueblo ceremonial drum built on a bark-on cottonwood log body — a construction detail that separates handmade tribal work from commercial production, where logs are stripped before use. Both heads are formed from rawhide soaked until pliable, hand-scalloped, stretched over the log ends, and laced through arched slots in the skirt with a crossing diamond pattern of rawhide thong. The hide dries and shrinks to a tight, resonant fit, producing the bold, full sound this example delivers. Drum-making of this tradition traces directly to Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America, where the craft has been passed down through generations using cottonwood, rawhide, and techniques unchanged for centuries.

CONDITION
Good. Both heads are intact with no tears or breaks, and rawhide lacing tension is holding throughout. Areas of chalky white mineral residue are visible across the playing surface, and light soiling appears at several lacing knot points on the lower skirt; no remarkable structural damage.
