Description

Etruscan Horse Sculptures, Pair — Solid Wood, Freestanding

A matched pair of large-format freestanding horse sculptures, each hand-carved from solid wood and finished in an ebonized black with white dot inlay and incised geometric and scroll decoration. The form draws directly from ancient Etruscan equine figural tradition — flat-bodied, dramatically abstracted, with a neck that arches in a full upward curl before hooking back toward the chest. The effect is totemic and graphic, commanding at nearly 27 inches tall. Each piece stands on an integrated rectangular plinth, and the two face as mirrored figures. The decorative saddle cloth panel — carved with lotus scroll motifs, diagonal hatch-work flanking, and white dot borders — reflects Southeast Asian craft traditions consistent with Balinese or Javanese export carving, placing these firmly in the mid-to-late 20th century decorative trade that blended Western aesthetic forms with Indonesian hand-work.

At this scale, the pair functions as architectural punctuation — equally at home flanking a console, anchoring a mantle, or commanding a bookcase. The Etruscan horse silhouette has been a fixture of serious decorative interiors since the mid-century period, typically realized in brass or patinated bronze; solid wood examples of this scale are considerably less common.

CONDITION Good. Both sculptures show wear consistent with age and handling, including surface scuffs and minor finish loss along the base edges. Joinery is visible at the plinth connection points on each figure. White dot inlay is largely intact with no significant losses observed.
