Folk Art Heart Trinket Box — Signed Karen Battles, 1986
A hand-carved ponderosa pine trinket box, signed and dated, by Karen Battles on October 9, 1986. The piece is formed from a solid log section — the rounded exterior left in natural form and finished in a warm honey lacquer that draws out the bold straight grain along the body and the dramatic concentric growth rings on the end faces. The heart-shaped lid is cut directly from the log itself, lifting free to reveal a smoothed hollow interior, so the silhouette reads as a seamless whole when closed. A natural twig knob centers the top as handle and ornament.
CONDITION
Good. No damage. The exterior finish is intact throughout, with natural surface checking on the end-grain faces consistent with wood movement over nearly four decades. Interior shows light darkening from age and use.
