Antique Folk Art Crucifix w/ Milagros INRI Painted Cross
A vintage to antique folk art wooden crucifix wall hanging featuring a hand-painted depiction of Christ in a naïve, expressive style. The cross itself shows significant age, with a hand-hewn form and remnants of a green-painted surface now heavily worn, revealing earlier layers and raw wood beneath. The “INRI” inscription remains visible at the top, accompanied by a small applied Sacred Heart element.
The painted figure of Christ appears to be a later addition to the older cross, reflecting the evolving nature of devotional objects that were often repainted or enhanced over time. The lower portion is adorned with nine attached milagros (devotional charms), likely added across periods of use, contributing to the piece’s layered history and spiritual character.
Condition:
In good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. Notable paint loss, surface cracking, insect damage, and wood erosion are present. The metal milagros and Sacred Heart show patina and oxidation. A modern hanger has been added to the reverse for display.
