Raku Studio Ceramic Vessel — Pueblo Geometric Cutwork, Crackle Glaze

A large hand-thrown raku vessel in full globular form — 13 inches across, the kind of scale that commands a room rather than occupies a shelf. The lower body is wrapped in dense cream crackle glaze and divided by three incised black horizontal bands; above the shoulder, a wide copper-red matte band born of metallic oxide reduction frames a carved register of four arched geometric panels. Each panel carries color-field blocks and stripe sequences in gold-yellow, terracotta, sage-green, and charcoal — a design vocabulary pulled directly from Hopi and Acoma textile traditions, with stepped rectangles, horizontal registers, and four-fold rotational symmetry that references Pueblo cardinal-direction cosmology. Viewed from above, the composition locks into a mandala-like geometry that rewards the second look. The neck opens to a small circular aperture. Every surface carries the full raku signature: crazing from thermal shock, carbon blush on the shoulder from open-flame reduction, an unglazed dark stoneware foot. Nothing here is decorative shorthand.

The cutwork shoulder register is the proof of intent. Carving through a thrown form at this scale — maintaining wall integrity while opening arched negative spaces across the entire shoulder — is the work of a practiced hand. Unsigned, estate-fresh, and without a comparable: this vessel sits at the serious end of Southwest studio raku, in the lineage of artists who worked the intersection of indigenous geometric design and the American raku tradition that took root in New Mexico and Arizona from the 1970s forward. 

CONDITION Good. No chips, cracks, or structural damage. Light surface scratching on the lower cream glaze consistent with handling and display; crazing, carbon patterning, and unglazed foot texture are inherent to the raku process and not defects.
