New York Stoneware Co Bird Jug 2 Gal Ft Edward
Antique 2-gallon stoneware jug by the New York Stoneware Co., Fort Edward, NY, circa 1861–1891—one of the longest-operating and most important potteries in the region. The impressed “2” capacity mark incorporates “New York Stoneware Co,” firmly identifying its origin during Fort Edward’s peak as a major Northeast stoneware center.
This example features the pottery’s iconic hand-painted cobalt bird-on-branch motif, executed with confident, fluid brushwork. The bird shows a defined head and eye with a lively, multi-stroke branch, placing it among the stronger decorative examples produced by shop decorators. These freehand designs were painted rapidly, making well-executed examples like this especially desirable. The warm salt-glazed surface displays a classic pebbled texture with natural kiln variation.
A compelling blend of American folk art and early industrial craftsmanship, this jug represents a highly collectible form from a key 19th-century pottery.
Condition:
In good antique condition, with wear consistent with age and use. There is light staining, glaze irregularities, and minor surface abrasions. The decoration shows some expected fading but remains clearly visible. No major cracks observed; structurally sound overall.
