Antique Stoneware Crock B S Palmer Carmel NY — 1½ Gal Salt Glaze
A salt-glazed stoneware crock from the second half of the 19th century, stamped in cobalt blue with the merchant mark B S PALMER / CARMEL N Y and the capacity numeral 1½, indicating a 1½-gallon vessel. The form is a standard straight-sided storage crock with two applied lug handles and a broad flanged rim, finished with Albany slip on the interior — the dark, glassy black lining characteristic of period Hudson Valley production. Carmel was a Putnam County market town; Palmer was an area merchant who commissioned or distributed regionally made stoneware, placing this piece squarely in the New York stoneware tradition of the 1860s–1880s.
No lid is included with this lot.
CONDITION
Good — age-appropriate wear throughout. Visible controlled hairlines present on the body and rim; chips noted consistent with long use. Cobalt stamp remains fully legible; Albany slip interior intact.
