Vintage Navajo Sterling Silver & Nevada Green Turquoise Bolo Tie — c.1960s–70s
A classic example of mid-century Navajo silversmithing, built around a large oval cabochon of vivid apple-green Nevada turquoise with natural mottled depth and minimal matrix — a color profile associated with high-desert Nevada sources prized for this rare zinc-driven green.
The silver surround is hand-fabricated in the traditional Navajo manner: a twisted rope-wire bezel cradles the stone, framed by a scalloped outer border stamped with alternating sunburst and fan-triangle motifs — a motif tradition in Navajo silverwork with roots going back to reservation-era smithing. The oxidized recesses give the stampwork strong definition and visual contrast against the bright stone. Tapered sterling cones with ball finials finish the braided black leather cord cleanly.
The piece is unsigned beyond confirmed sterling content. The silverwork, stone selection, and construction are consistent with quality Navajo trade pieces produced during the bolo's peak cultural moment in the Southwest. Offered as found — polishing left to the buyer.
CONDITION
Good overall. The silver carries natural age toning with oxidation settled into the stampwork, giving the piece strong visual character. Stampwork is crisp. The turquoise is secure in its setting and shows natural inclusions and surface variation visible in the macro photographs. The leather cord is age-darkened but intact and functional. We'll leave the polishing to you.
