Santo Domingo Pueblo Spiny Oyster & Turquoise Dangle Earrings
The jewelry traditions of Santo Domingo Pueblo — known today as Kewa — represent one of the oldest and most sophisticated lapidary lineages in the American Southwest. For generations, Kewa artists have worked with the same elemental materials: turquoise, jet, white shell, and the vivid orange shell of the Spondylus, each chosen for both its beauty and its deep ceremonial resonance within Pueblo culture.
These earrings are a quiet expression of that tradition. Each features a fan-shaped wing of spiny oyster shell, its natural ribbed surface preserved and polished to reveal a warm gradient from amber-brown at the shoulder to a rich, saturated orange at the scalloped hem. The shell is capped by a hand-cut trapezoid slab of natural turquoise — good color, lively matrix — separated from the shell below by a precise band of alternating jet and white shell. It is a restrained detail, but one that speaks directly to the inlay sensibility at the heart of Kewa craft.
The earrings suspend from sterling silver French hook wires. No hallmark is present, though the materials and construction are fully consistent with vintage Santo Domingo Pueblo work.
CONDITION
Good. Both shell wings and turquoise caps are intact, with no chips or cracks. The jet and white shell inlay band is complete and undisturbed on both earrings. The French hook wires carry light oxidation consistent with age. No repairs. Please review all photographs carefully.
