Gene Nataan is a Navajo silversmith working in the old-style fabrication tradition, a discipline he inherited directly from his mother, Elsie Natan, and one he has carried forward to his wife, Francis, and son, Gabriel — three generations of a family deeply committed to the integrity of Diné metalwork. His hallmark, a block-stamped "N" accompanied by a Sterling designation, is among the more recognized signatures in contemporary Navajo jewelry.
This ring is characteristic of Nataan's approach: substantial, hand-fabricated, and uncompromising in its construction. The face presents a deeply lustrous black onyx cabochon — elongated oval, measuring 29.47 × 14.18 mm — set within a shadowbox bezel and encircled by a hand-twisted rope wire border. Flanking the stone are deeply chased feather stampings, their detail crisp and confident. Graduated silver bead clusters punctuate the bezel at top and bottom. The wide split shank, fan-cut on the interior, adds structural presence and reflects the kind of benchwork attention that distinguishes hand-fabricated Navajo silver from commercial production.
