Vintage Zuni Sun Face Ring by Fred & Lolita Natachu, Sterling Sz 12
Among the most celebrated collaborative teams in twentieth-century Zuni silversmithing, Fred and Lolita Natachu built a body of work defined by technical precision, cultural depth, and an unwavering commitment to the ceremonial imagery of their pueblo. Working together from the 1960s onward, the couple became particularly known for their channel inlay treatments of the Sun Face, the Rainbow Man, and the Knife Wing — three of the most spiritually significant figures in the Zuni pantheon — executed in the four-stone palette the Zuni have long considered their own: turquoise, coral, jet, and mother of pearl.
Lolita Natachu was born into this tradition. The daughter of Jacob Haloo, one of the foundational figures of modern Zuni lapidary art, she grew up in a household where silversmithing was both livelihood and cultural practice. Her sisters — Dolly Banteah, Nancy Laconsello, and Rolanda Haloo — are each recognized silversmiths in their own right, making the Haloo family one of the most artistically distinguished in Zuni Pueblo history. Fred and Lolita's son, Troy Natachu, has continued the family tradition into the present generation.
This ring represents the Natachus at the height of their craft. The solid sterling silver face carries a fully realized Sun Face composition in channel inlay — twelve alternating rays of turquoise and jet radiating outward from a central circle inlaid in all four stones, with a black point at its heart evoking the four sacred directions. The diamond-shaped silver ground is bordered on each corner by precisely cut chevron bands of coral, jet, and shell, their parallel lines maintaining perfect register across the full width of the face. The lapidary work throughout is meticulous: each triangular turquoise point cut to a uniform profile, each stone fitted tightly within its channel, the silver dividers clean and consistent from center to edge.
The Sun Face — Zuni's great solar deity — carries associations of abundance, protection, and the life-sustaining power of light. For the Natachus, it was not simply a popular subject. It was a recurring expression of belief, rendered here with the skill and intentionality that distinguished their work across six decades of practice.
The solid sterling shank is wide and unadorned, its plain surface a deliberate counterpoint to the complexity of the face. At 17.1 grams, the ring is substantial in hand without being unwieldy. Both hallmarks — FLN and STERLING — are cleanly struck on the interior shank.
CONDITION
Very good. The channel inlay is fully intact, with no missing stones, chips, or cracking observed at any stone edge. Natural oxidation has settled into the recessed channels, enriching the contrast of the composition. The face shows light surface wear consistent with age. The shank carries more pronounced scratching from use. Both hallmarks are cleanly struck and fully legible. No repairs or restorations noted. Polishing left to buyer preference.
