Vintage Zuni Sun Face Ring — Turquoise, Coral, Onyx & MOP Inlay
This is a vintage Zuni Sun Face ring executed in classic channel inlay — the technique Zuni lapidaries developed into a distinct art form beginning in the mid-twentieth century. Fourteen individually fitted turquoise petals radiate outward from the central figure, representing the rays of the Sun Father. The face itself follows traditional iconography precisely: a coral and onyx forehead divided down the center — a deliberate rendering of sunrise and sunset, and of the individual within the family — over a band of jet, and a luminous dome of mother of pearl below, anchored by a round onyx eye. Each stone carries symbolic weight in Zuni belief: turquoise for the bond between physical and spiritual, coral for protection, mother of pearl for intuition, jet for definition.
The silver tests as sterling and carries no hallmark, consistent with unsigned mid-century Zuni workshop production. All inlay is intact and secure. The ring is complete, coherent, and culturally grounded. Condition details and full specifications below.
CONDITION
Good overall. All fourteen turquoise petals and all center-face inlay stones are present and secure — no missing pieces, no cracks, no lifting. Natural patina on the silver is consistent with vintage age. Light surface scratching to the turquoise and silver visible in close-up photos. No repairs noted. Polishing left to the buyer.
