Vintage Navajo Sterling Silver & Turquoise Brooch — Concho Flower, c.1940s–60s
A confident example of mid-twentieth century Navajo silversmithing, this brooch centers on a repousse-domed concho finished with finely hand-stamped scalloped borders — tooling executed with a consistency and care that places this above tourist-grade work of the era. Six hand-formed navette leaves — three per side — fan outward from the center, each with a raised spine and recessed, oxidized sides that give the composition its graphic depth and bilateral symmetry.
The center stone is a 9.6 mm turquoise oval cabochon set in a plain bezel, light aqua-blue with a dark matrix inclusion and surface micro-cracking consistent with a natural, untreated stone. The reverse shows a traditional handmade pin back — a sliding stem through two soldered wire loops — rather than a commercial finding, a detail that speaks to the piece's handcraft origins.
Unsigned, with construction consistent with Navajo work from the 1940s through the 1960s. A versatile piece that wears as well on a jacket lapel today as it did the day it was made.
CONDITION
Good overall. The silver carries a natural patina with oxidation settled into the recessed grooves — original character, not damage. The turquoise is secure in its setting with no chips or losses; surface micro-cracking visible in the close-up photos is consistent with a natural untreated stone and does not affect structural integrity. The pin stem and handmade wire clasp are intact and functional. No repairs, alterations, or losses noted. We'll leave the polishing to you.
