Description

Live Purple Prickly Pear Cactus — Hand-Painted Talavera Jardinière, Dolly

A purple prickly pear cactus (Opuntia santa-rita) at peak color, potted in a hand-painted Mexican Talavera jardinière — a pairing that couldn't be more at home in the Mesilla Valley. The Santa Rita is the region's most recognizable prickly pear, native to the Chihuahuan Desert borderlands of New Mexico. Its pads deepen to saturated violet under drought and cold stress, and this specimen is performing at its visual best: dense, multi-stemmed, and actively pushing yellow flower buds at the time of photography. That bloom cycle will give way to small edible purple fruit — both wildlife habitat and kitchen ingredient. A clump this dense and this color-saturated represents years of slow growth; the pad count alone tells you this plant has been established for a long time.

The jardinière is a large globular Talavera planter with applied loop handles at the shoulder and an all-over hand-painted design of scrolling foliate panels, stylized flowers, and crosshatch lattice in deep hunter green on cream ground — the classic verde sobre blanco palette of the Puebla tradition. Talavera pottery has been produced in Mexico since the 16th century, when Spanish artisans brought the tin-glazed earthenware technique to Puebla, where it blended with indigenous craft to become one of Mexico's most recognized folk ceramic traditions. Each piece is unique. The lot includes the cactus, Talavera jardinière, and a metal rolling plant dolly with caster wheels. Handling note: use heavy gloves — spines and fine glochid bristles are a serious contact hazard.

CONDITION Very Good. The cactus is healthy and actively budding, with full, firm pads and strong color throughout. Base-level browning and weathering at the lower stems is normal for an established specimen of this density. The ceramic planter shows minor surface wear consistent with patio use; glaze is intact across the body.
