Description

Antique Western Stock Saddle, 18" — Biscuit Horn, Exposed Wood Tree

A genuine antique Western stock saddle of substantial age, built in the tradition of late 19th to early 20th century working ranch saddles. The most striking feature is the large flat-topped biscuit horn — a style largely displaced by the modern wrapped horn before 1910 — mounted on a rawhide-covered wooden tree now largely exposed as the original leather covering has failed over time. The round, deeply scooped cantle retains its shape and structural integrity despite significant surface checking throughout the bare wood. The skirts show remnants of hand tooling beneath heavy patina and wear. Mustard-yellow wool panels line the underside, and the original wooden stirrups remain with their leathers intact.

No maker's mark has been located. The iron ring rigging, biscuit horn profile, round cantle, and wooden stirrup construction are consistent with Texas or California working saddle tradition, circa 1880s–1910s.

CONDITION Fair. Weathered, aged, and showing signs of use and outdoor display — the leather is not supple throughout, and the cushioning to the flaps is worn, as shown. The leather covering on the tree, horn, and cantle has failed almost entirely, leaving bare and checked wood exposed at the pommel and cantle. The seat leather survives but is severely cracked and splitting. Offered as a display, historical, or restoration piece.
