Folk Art Carved Wood & Plaster Crucifix — Polychrome Cristo
A boldly hand-carved and hand-painted wood and plaster crucifix in the folk religious tradition, presenting Cristo with expressive, unacademic carving: deeply modeled face with painted crown of thorns in gold and black, flowing black hair, and vivid red wound markings at hands, side, and feet. The corpus is carved and finished separately, mounted to a dark-painted wood cross set into a solid weighted trapezoidal base. The direct, gestural carving aesthetic is consistent santero tradition, though no maker attribution is confirmed.
CONDITION
Good. Paint wear and finish loss present throughout, with chips in the wood consistent with age and handling. Polychrome face and wound detailing remain largely intact and legible.
